25 Years Ago, They Answered the Call

Twenty-five years. And somehow, for those of us who lived through September 11, 2001, it can still feel like yesterday.

We remember where we were when we heard.

We remember watching the unimaginable unfold.

We remember the faces of strangers covered in ash. The first responders running toward buildings while everyone else was running away. The photographs taped to walls. The families waiting for phone calls that would never come.

We remember the silence.

And then, we remember what came next.

In the days after September 11, something extraordinary happened.

Americans stepped forward.

Young men and women raised their hands and volunteered to serve a country that was hurting. They left behind parents, spouses, babies, careers, and plans for the future.

They went because they believed their country needed them.

Many would spend the next two decades deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan. Their children would celebrate birthdays without them. Their spouses would hold families together while they were thousands of miles away. Their parents would wait for the phone to ring.

Some came home wounded.

Some came home carrying wounds no one else could see.

And some never came home at all.

This is the generation that inspired our mission.

Five years after September 11, the Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund was created because Michigan veterans were coming home from these wars and discovering that sometimes, when they needed help most, there was nowhere left to turn.

So a group of people decided to answer.

Not with red tape.

Not with judgment.

But with a simple promise:

If you served our country, you should never have to face your hardest days alone.

Twenty years later, that promise still guides us.

We've met veterans in moments they never imagined they'd face. We've heard the worry in a parent's voice. We've seen families trying desperately to hold everything together.

And again and again, we've been reminded that the cost of service doesn't end when a deployment does.

Twenty-five years ago, they answered the call.

Today, it is our turn to remember them.

Those we lost on September 11.

Those who ran toward danger.

Those who raised their hands to serve.

Those who never came home.

And those who came home forever changed.

We remember them all.

We will never forget.
